About Event

Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organización para la Unidad Africana (OUA) on 25 May, 1963.

"On 25 May 1963, these great visionaries took the historic stride and formed an institution that would be the vanguard of the African people’s aspirations for freedom, unity and solidarity. This Day would not have been possible without the sacrifices of the the founding fathers and those of the African heroes and heroines who fought to liberate our continent from the vestiges of Colonialism, Discriminacion racial and Apartheid in South Africa. Today, we are free because of the sacrifices they made."

His Excellency Robert Mugabe, Chairperson of the African Union, 2015

Despite the disbandment of the OAU and the establishment of the African Union as it successor in 2002, the name and date have been retained as a celebration of the African unity.

Each year, Africa Day is the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the continent and to reflect on its remaining challenges.

From the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to the African Union (AU)

The AOU Charter was signed on 25 May, 1963 by leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African States in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the Organization established its headquarters. The remaining two signed later that same year. A further 21 African States joined over the years, with South Africa becoming the 53rd Member on 23 May 1994.

The OAU aimed to:
- promote the unity and solidarity of African States,
coordinate their efforts to achieve a better life for the peoples of Africa,
- defend their sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence and eradicate all forms of colonialism from Africa
- promote international cooperation, giving due regard to the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and
- coordinate and harmonise members’ political, diplomatic, economic, educational, cultural, health, welfare, scientific, technical and defence policies.

The vision of the African Union is that of: “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in global arena.”
